Interview: Fee Waybill
The Tubes opened their 2015 UK tour at the Fleece last year and the sold out show was a scorcher. They’re back again and if you don’t have your ticket, mach schnell because they’re going fast (get ‘em here). Their Mondo Pulp show promises a revamped set list that will deliver new material but with plenty of favourites too.If you think it’s all image with this band then think again, they’ve got a knack of wrapping up ear worms in what is best described as quasi-prog-punk-pop and live, the songs really come alive. Singer Fee Waybill is the latest rocker to be subjected to the vinyl enquirer…here’s his statement.
What was the first record you ever bought and where did you buy it?
Blueberry Hill by Fats Domino. Bought it at the local record store in Scottsdale Arizona. Had to be late 50’s.
is needed now More than ever
What was the most recent record you bought and where did you buy it?
Sonic Highways, Foo Fighters and Amazon online.
What record do you stick on the deck to sooth your soul?
Mercy by Duffy
Have you bought a record on the basis of a great single and then been disappointed by the rest of the album? If so, tell us all about it…
No, the filler tracks usually have the hidden gem track that I end up liking more that the single.
What record do you turn up to maximum to get in to that party mood?
Doobie Brothers, China Grove.
If we had the ability to land you at the recording of one classic LP so you could witness the whole recording process, what would you choose and why?
Are You Experienced, Jimi Hendrix, he made me want to be a rock singer!!!
Ever bought a record solely because you liked the sleeve? If so, what was it and did it delight you or disappoint you?
King Crimson, In the Court of the Crimson King, unbelievably delighted!!!
Oh no, your house is burning down and you can only rescue one record! What would it be and why?
The Beatles (aka The White Album). The memory of listening to it for the first time with The Tubes at Vince Welnicks’s mom’s house in Imperial Beach, CA.
What’s your favourite record sleeve? Tell us all about it (and whether or not the music gives you as much pleasure as the sleeve).
Dude, it’s not about the sleeve, it’s about the music!!
Morbidity alert: what record would you like played at your funeral?
Purple Haze, Jimi Hendrix. I sang it at my first and only try out for a band in High School, The Marks Brothers. They said I would never be a rock singer and stick to the High School chorus. Fuck you Paul!!! I guess I showed them!
