Interview: L U C Y
In 2018, Red Bull Music Academy will celebrate its 20th anniversary by returning to Berlin. The academy provides a month-long home to producers, vocalists, beat makers, instrumentalists and DJs from across the world, all complemented by innovative live music events and workshops from some of the biggest creative forces in music.
Before they head over to the German capital, the team have set up a series of RBMA Sessions across the UK. Tonight, respected grime producer, DJ and RinseFM host Sir Spyro will be delivering insights into his process at the Love Inn at an RBMA lecture, and later on he’ll be gracing the decks alongside Academy alumni Drippin and Faze Miyake in the same location. Bristol born and bred bass don L U C Y will also be joining them. We caught up with the ascendant star her in anticipation for the exciting event.
When did you first start mixing and producing?
I started when I was about 14 for both – but only seriously from 16 onwards.
You split your time between London and Guildford – which place do you think has helped you develop most as an artist and selector?
Bristol helps me for constant inspiration, and Guildford helps me because it’s rubbish! There’s no temptation to go out and do anything else, so my productions have improved a lot. Having a weekly show at Kane FM for almost two years has helped me the most with mixing.
How do your DIY videos complement your sound?
Difficult question! They were meant to be just for entertainment purposes, but hopefully some people have read into them and come up with their own interpretations.
Are you excited to play alongside Sir Spyro and Faze Miyake?
Yes it’s so so mad – I’m a big fan of both of them for both their production, work ethic and mixing so it’s a blessing to have my name on a lineup next to them. I’m very grateful.
is needed now More than ever
What can we expect from your set?
Hard question, but vibe-wise my sets are usually dark, and energetic with a sprinkle of dubs.
What else are you excited for this year?
Getting out of Guildford and moving back to Bristol for a bit and then to London. I’m excited to actually spend time back in Bristol with my mates.
Music-wise I have a release with trapdoor which is coming out in a few months which I’m excited about, and I’m playing at Motion in October which has been dream of mine since I was really young. I’m feeling very grateful.
L U C Y will appear alongside Spy Spyro, Faze Miyake and Drippin at The Love Inn, Stokes Croft, tonight (Thursday, August 3) from 10pm. Sir Spyro’s lecture, also at the Love Inn, will also take place at the Love Inn from 6pm. Applications for RBMA are invited from June 15 – September 4. Apply here.
