Interview: The Dead Daisies
Formed by polymath David Lowy the Dead Daisies have had an excellent run since their inception. A who’s who of rockers has played and recorded with the band, but despite the fluctuating line up they’ve a cohesive sound and have built up a big following. Burn it Down is their fourth recording and they’re on an extensive tour to promote, including a Saturday night at the O2 Academy. Drummer Deen Castronovo has been kind enough to submit to the vinyl enquirer and the fine folk at the Academy have some meet n greet tickets to give away. If you fancy winning some then simply email rhys@bristol247.com and use your skill and judgement to tell us who you think is Deen’s favourite band (hint, have a read below). Put Dead Daisies Comp in as your subject.
What was the first record you ever bought and where did you buy it?
Alice Cooper Killers, bought it at my local K Mart!
is needed now More than ever
What was the most recent record you bought and where did you buy it?
Dead Daisies Live and Louder, had to learn the live versions – Brian Tichy (previous drummer with the DD) just smokes on that release!
What record do you stick on the deck to sooth your soul?
John Mayer’s Battle Studies, a masterpiece in my book.
Have you bought a record on the basis of a great single and then been disappointed by the rest of the album? If so, tell us all about it…
I can honestly say it’s never happened. If I’m a fan, I can appreciate any release I purchase and it’s gonna deliver the goods in some way: either songwriting or the musicianship.
What record do you turn up to maximum to get in to that party mood?
Loaded Question LOL! Anything Kiss!
If we had the ability to land you at the recording of one classic LP so you could witness the whole recording process, what would you choose and why?
Kiss Destroyer. Bob Ezrin is a genius in my opinion. I would love to see how he gets his visions on certain records like Alice Cooper’s Welcome to my Nightmare as well. I wouldn’t stop at one of his productions: all of his work!
Ever bought a record solely because you liked the sleeve? If so, what was it and did it delight you or disappoint you?
Kiss Alive because it was the catalyst for my wanting to be a professional musician or rock star from a young kid’s perspective.
Oh no, your house is burning down and you can only rescue one record! What would it be and why?
Wait!!! I’d get all of them out or die trying LOL! Again, Kiss Destroyer, flaming youth right LOLOL!!
What’s your favourite record sleeve? Tell us all about it (and whether or not the music gives you as much pleasure as the sleeve).
Ok is Gene Simmons doing this interview to see how much I gave him as a child into adulthood? Once again Kiss Alive: you’re welcome Mr. Simmons, they are my Beatles so thank you Mr. Simmons!
Morbidity alert: what record would you like played at your funeral?
It’s a must for me: two songs Fire and Rain by James Taylor and What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong.
Dead Daisies will rock the arse off the O2 Academy on Saturday 14th April 2018, tickets here.
