Review: Kojey Radical, The Crofter’s Rights
Kojey Radical came to town last Sunday. The Crofters Rights in Stokes Croft was momentarily blessed with an electric night that shed light on some of Bristol’s up-and-coming musicians. Eskimoe led the line with his first ever live show. He made the crowd giggle as he acknowledged his unfamiliarity to live performance while also getting their heads bobbing to his silky beats. Next came ThisisDA (the man who made it all happen) who stimulated the audience’s appetite with his contagious energy and smooth lyrics, thus when Kojey stepped onto the scene he was greeted by a warm and welcome atmosphere.
Kojey Radical is a force to be reckoned with. His stage presence is heart-felt. He has the ability to make the crowd laugh moments before stunning them into awe of his passionate poetry. Mr Radical first caught my attention with his captivating visuals for his song, Bambu. His content is very political although he doesn’t strike you as a typically conscious rapper. His dictionary is immense and his words flow out of him in a manner that resembles spoken word. Yet when his words are layered with a contemporary hip-hop beat, the combination evokes a rebellious streak in the listener.
Kojey also has an ability to expose his vulnerable side through music as if it were second nature; something that a lot of other rappers seem very reluctant to do. This ability to reveal his emotions and internal conflicts help the audience relate to him and his message. His background in art and creative direction has led him to ensure each of his music videos are entrancing visual experiences, and this is why Kojey Radical is an all-rounder who transcends genre. Expect big things from him over the next couple of years.
