Former X-Factor contestant’s guitar obsession
We grabbed a quick chat with former X Factor contestant, and Devonian, Luke Friend, ahead of his forthcoming Bristol gig…
What are you doing right now?
I am currently on my first radio tour. It’s absolutely incredible meeting so many new people and getting the word out about my first single, Hole in my Heart.
is needed now More than ever
What was being on X Factor really like?
A huge whirlwind. It does involve a lot of pressure, trust me, but the experience is one not to forget and I will keep close to me forever.
What have you been up to since then?
I’ve been non-stop writing the album! And having so much fun with it. Having a record deal with Sony and releasing music is something I’ve been wanting to do for years, now is my chance.
Your style is very Devon, how do you feel about your adopted home county?
I love it. The sea air, breeze, it’s all beautiful and wonderful. I actually don’t know how to surf yet though. I cant wait to go back there. I’ve been missing it since moving to London!
Do you think your sound would’ve been different had you stayed up north?
No, not at all. I mean my experiences may have been different whilst growing up, that means the writing in terms of lyrics may have altered a bit, but I will always stay true to my sound.
How many guitars do you own and what’s your favourite?
Hahaha, currently around 12, but I got around seven of them from trusty car boot sales.
Who inspires you as a songwriter?
I’m in love with Bob Dylan’s song writing. He really shows how to make that one person really feel special and without them even realising it until the song has finished. And that goes the same for Pearl Jam and Stevie Nicks.
Where next for Luke Friend?
So much! Once this radio tours finished, I’m getting ready for the single release on March 29, Hole In My Heart, and I’ll be rehearsing like mad for my first headline tour. I think it’s turning out to be such an amazing set list, which I’m so proud of.
