Release: Nocturnes EP, Meadowlark

By Ngaio Anyia  Friday Mar 10, 2017

Bristol band Meadowlark, made up of Dan Broadley (guitars & production) and Kate McGill (vocals & keys) have released new EP Nocturnes’ – a collection of 3 late-night-style reworks of previously released singles along with a cover of the 2007 pop hit ‘About You Now’ (Sugababes). Recorded with a string quartet, the songs are stripped back to fragile states, where the melody is everything; so brittle it could snap at any moment.

They answered some of our Quickfire Questions ahead of the release:

Which artists are inspiring you right now?
It’s cliche to say since we are currently out on the road with them, but Amber Run have been a huge inspiration these past few weeks, from hearing their new record, seeing it live and having long music related chats to them. I urge everyone to check out their new album, it’s incredible. Other than that we are currently listening to Bonobo, Sigrid, Ryan Adams, Ariana Grande and everything in between to kill the time whilst driving to cities!

What’s your favourite song to play?
Paraffin is our joint favourite, we are still so proud of that song and the energy it transmits live makes it such a fun one to put in our set list.

Who are your major musical influences?
I grew up listening to a lot of Michael Jackson, Bob Marley and Nirvana, I still fondly return to all of their records and draw inspiration from them. Kate was brought up on a healthy diet of pop compilation records from the 60s, 70’s and 80’s that her parents used to spin on a regular basis which has definitely fuelled her hunger for good songwriting and catchy choruses!

What song do you pick to get ready for a night out?
Late Nineties and Early Noughties playlists definitely put us in a partying mood, you forget just how much you remember from those eras of music until you start rattling through them. Many a night has consisted of us losing our voices from singing the classics too loudly.

What have you got coming up?
Our new EP ‘Nocturnes’ is due for release in March, featuring various late-night reworks of our favourite songs. After that we hope to be touring as much as possible and releasing some brand new music for people to hear!

‘About You Now’ was chosen to complete the EP because under its shiny pop exterior the chords and melodies speak of a darker tone which is everything Meadowlark are about. The duo have steadily been gaining themselves a reputation for their captivating pop melodies and lush production. Signed to Believe Recordings, they’ll release their debut album in 2017. So stay tuned for more on that..
