Metal & Prog Picks: Summer 2020

By Robin Askew  Friday Jun 19, 2020

It’s going to be bizarre, but as of right now you have only one opportunity to rock this summer. That’s with Newport’s finest, Skindred, at Filton Airfield. More in hope than expectation, we’ve revised and updated the list of coming soons from September onwards. It remains to be seen whether we’ll actually get to enjoy ace guitarist Tony MacAlpine in the confines of the Exchange, the current no-original-members incarnation of Tangerine Dream at St. George’s or that diabolical double-bill of Mayhem and Mortiis at the Fleece.

Skindred
Filton Airfield, Aug 7
The only event of interest to us at the Utilita Live from the Drive-In concert series at Filton Airfield. Apparently, you’ll get a little designated rockin’ area next to your vehicle so you don’t have to just sit there doing the Wayne’s World Bohemian Rhapsody thing. It’s going to be distinctly weird, but if anyone can whip up some kind of atmosphere in such an unpromising setting it’s Benji. Hell, he might even encourage us to do the socially distanced Newport Helicopter. The Welsh genre dodgers are still touring their top 30 album, Big Tings. This was released back in 2018, when they played a memorably packed and sweaty show at the Academy. No doubt this will be very different indeed.

COMING SOON

Here’s our essential diary of upcoming gigs that should be of interest to anyone of a rockin’ disposition.
