Mud Morganfield talks about dad Muddy Waters
Son of blues legend Muddy Waters, Mud Morganfield heads to Bristol this month to play a gig as part of the new Americana Festival in Bristol. We grabbed a quick five-minute chat with the musician ahead of the show.
What role did music play in your childhood?
Oh music was everything, everything, not least because of Pops’ career of course.
Was in inevitable that you’d become a musician?
Yes, it was, and I’ve played music all my life, albeit I only really became a full time musician 10 years ago.
is needed now More than ever
How has your father helped shape you as a musician?
In every way – I remember him buying me a drum kit and stuff as a kid and basically Pops provided all the education and equipment i needed to get started.
Any other occupations on your radar?
Yeah, well I was a truck driver for a long time, driving some real big rigs… full-time music has come only relatively recently.
What does Chicago mean to you?
It’s everything. I was born here, live here and will probably die here.
Would you call your music Americana? How would you sum it up?
I call my music blues. Americana is another word for it perhaps, but i call it blues.
How was your Later with Jools performance? And how important do you think shows are like that?
It didn’t do no harm that’s for sure, although I was pretty established by then, but Jools certainly helped as did BluesFest at Albert Holland, North Sea Jazz and other things.
Tell us something about you we won’t know…
I don’t drink, don’t take drugs, don’t smoke and always try and tell up and coming artists it’s bull to think that you need to do that stuff.
