Monday, Spectres present Dark Habits, Benjamin Perry Boathouse
Ace Bristol noise merchants Spectres (Howling Owl Records) launch their new Dark Habits zine with a night of suitably dark sounds and dark words. There’s live music from Nzumbe, a DJ set from Silver Waves plus film screenings and readings of horror stories.

Tuesday: Jojo Mayer / Nerve, Fleece
Fine tuned trio led by virtuoso drummer Mayer that cross-pollinates electronic club genres with real-time improvisation drawing on jazz and rock traditions. Our reviewer described their last visit to The Fleece as “mesmerising…much of the audience remains entranced by Mayer’s undisputed technical prowess, to the extent that many forget to dance.”

Tuesday: NAO, Motion
This London based singer has worked with Disclosure and her airy future R&B sound has been compared to everyone from Kelis to FKA Twigs and Jessie Ware. She featured in the BBC’s Sound of 2016 list, and her debut album For All We Know came out in the summer to great reviews.

Tuesday: Satie: Memoirs of a Pear Shaped Life, St Georges
Is it a concert? Is it a play? No, it’s a “theatricital”, apparently. Anne Lovett (piano) plays a selection of Erik Satie’s work, while actor Allan Corduner plays the ageing composer as he looks back on his life.

Wednesday: Paul Gilbert, Marble Factory
Ace shredder Paul Gilbert isn’t quite in the Joe Satriani/Steve Vai punter-pulling league, but he does have a gimmick all of his own: playing guitar with a cordless drill. He’s also recorded seventeen solo albums since 1998, the latest of which is entitled I Can Destroy. Expect the front row to be full of Bristol guitarists scraping their jaws off the floor.

Thursday: War Against Sleep / SJ Esau, Stag & Hounds
Duncan Fleming has long been one of Bristol’s sharpest songwriters, and we missed him while he was away. This launch show for 6th album Eyes of the Beast will feature guest vocalists including Sam Wisternoff (S J Esau), Emily Breeze (Candy Darling) and Andrea Hernandez (Little Crow). Support from the brilliant one-man folk / indie / hip-hop collisions of SJ Esau.https://b247-test.webringly.com/channel/whats-on/music-01/indiealternative/war-against-sleep-sj-esau-bristol?time=1478131200

Thursday, The Mouse Outfit, Fleece
The Mouse Outfit are a 9-piece group from Manchester blending conscious rapping with jazzy grooves and serious musicianship. Featuring three vocalists, two percussionists, sax, guitar, trumpet and bass, they’re a great live band and already firm favourites in Bristol.

Thursday, Saxon, O2 Academy
Titans of the British metal scene from the late ‘70s onwards, Saxon have enjoyed a glorious renaissance with an updated, heavier sound and a string of excellent albums. Supports include Girlschool, the world’s longest running all-female rock band.

Friday, Iyabe / Run Logan Run / Sugar Horse, The Cube
With a uniquely subtle and atmospheric sound, 5-piece alternative band Iyabe are definitely among Bristol’s ones-to-watch at the moment, and tonight is a launch show for their debut EP, the intriguingly titled Biology. Biography. Culture. Supports include jazz-noise duo Run Logan Run, while DJs include Annie Gardiner of Hysterical Injury.

Manchester based MC Bugzy Malone burst onto the grime scene last year with an appearance on BBC 1Xtra’s freestyle show and horn-led single Watch Your Mouth. His debut LP made the Top 10 of the UK charts.

Recently voted one of the Top 20 clubs in the world, Motion has now been packing them in for a decade. European techno titan Laurent Garnier uncorks the bubbly.
