Monday: Dinosaur Jr, Motion
Formed in 1984, Dinosaur Jr are one of the most influential bands in the American alt-rock scene. Fronted by stoner axe hero J Mascis and reaching the peak of their fame in the early ’90s, their fusion of classic rock, feedback and slacker charm has made them cult favourites ever since.

Monday: Britten Sinfonia: Steve Reich at 80, Colston Hall

Britten Sinfonia is one of the world’s most celebrated and pioneering ensembles. In celebration of Steve Reich’s 80th birthday, the ensemble will be performing Different Trains, along with Three Tales and new work Pulse. Clark Rundell conducts.

Tuesday: 65daysofstatic / Thought Forms, Marble Factory
One of the UK’s leading post rock bands, 65dos’ sprawling, ethereal music is heavily influenced by glitch, d&b and techno. Thought Forms have been Bristol scene heroes for years, and their beautifully realised third album Songs About Drowning will surely confirm their status among the leading UK guitar-manglers.

Wednesday: Bristol Ensemble, St George’s
Arvo Pärt is one of the world’s most popular living composers. This programme offers a broad overview, from 1976’s definitive Symphony No. 4 to 2009 choral work Adam’s Lament.

Wednesday: Mono / Alcest, Marble Factory
Japanese instrumental rockers make atmospheric, string-heavy songs of epic proportions. Support comes from Alcest, a similarly atmospheric band with roots in black metal.

Thursday: DJ Yoda, Marble Factory
DJ Yoda presents a live set of his Stranger Things mixtape. Featuring favourites from 1983, and laced with samples from the Netflix original series, expect Dolly Parton, Toto, Jefferson Airplane, The Clash, Joy Division and Foreigner mixed with dialogue from Chief Hopper, Eleven, Jonathan and Nancy.

Friday: Onslaught, Fleece
Definitive Bristol thrash metallers Onslaught play a rare hometown show as part of the 17-date UK leg marking the 30th anniversary of their influential album The Force. Their current tour has taken them all over the place, with gigs in most of continental Europe, plus Vietnam, Indonesia and Taiwan, and an eight-date tour of China – sharing a stage with the Backstreet Boys, no less.

Friday: Danny Brown, Marble Factory
Equal parts troubled artist and Iggy-style party animal, Detroit rapper Brown is a rock star for our times. New album Atrocity Exhibition references quintessential hip-hop touchstones Joy Division and Nine Inch Nails.

Friday: Elder Island / Early Doors, The Old Malt House
Bristol based neo funk and soul trio Elder Island launch their new EP Seeds in Sand. They make electronic infused funk, featuring the powerful R&B vocals of Katy Sargent. Support from mixtape collectors Early Doors, with visuals by Rosie Carmichael.

Friday – Sunday: Submerge Festival, various venues
Ambitious visual arts and electronic music fest at venues including Colston Hall and Coroner’s Court. Musical contributors include Koreless, Rrose, Fis, Octo Octa and CUTS.

Saturday: The Bug, Lakota
Industrial dub maverick The Bug (Kevin Martin) is one of our favourites, and we were lucky enough to get an interview with him last year. Tonight he heads up a killer lineup of bass-heavy troublemakers featuring Hatcha, Breakage, Goth-Trad, Take-Off Bristol DJs, Buckfast Boys and Khanum. The Bug’s set will feature vocals from grime stars Flowdan and Riko Dan.

Saturday: In Motion: Hot Creations
Local hero Eats Everything heads up this showcase from Jamie Jones’ label Hot Creations. Also playing are Richy Ahmed, Russ Yallop, Solardo, Denny, Detlef, and Waifs & Strays.

Sunday: Show of Hands with Miranda Sykes

Sunday: Julia Holter, Anson Rooms
