Monday: Louden Wainwright III, St George’s. 
Singer, songwriter and raconteur Wainwright  has been a star of folk music for close to half a century. The special guest for this show is longtime friend and collaborator Chaim Tannenbaum.

Monday: British Paraorchestra Sextet, At Bristol Planetarium
In the first of this week’s sessions from At Bristol’s Planetarium dome, Simple Things 2016 present a re-working of Terry Riley’s minimalist classic In C. Performed by members of the British Paraorchestra – the the world’s first professional ensemble for disabled musicians – the music will be accompanied by state of the art visuals.

Tuesday: De Staat, The Louisiana. 
Dutch quintent De Staat have built a passionate cult following thanks to their quirky take on alternative rock and energetic live shows. They recently supported Muse on their European tour.

Tuesday: George Monbiot & Ewan McLennan, St George’s.
Bristol based singer-songwriter Ewan McLennan teams up with journalist and environmental activist George Monbiot for a night of music and spoken word on themes of loneliness and social isolation.

Tuesday: Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, At Bristol Planetarium
Following the release of her critically-lauded album EARS earlier this year, Simple Things present a one-off performance by U.S composer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith accompanied by specially prepared visuals.

Wednesday: Cirque du Soul, Motion.
Cirque Du Soul are travelling party-starters known for colourful design and musical variety. Headlining this one is UK house mainstay Low Steppa, with support from Toucan.

Wednesday: Robin Hitchcock, The Lantern
Once the frontman of The Soft Boys, post-punk folk singer Hitchcock has worked with everyone from Jarvis Cocker and KT Tunstall to REM’s Peter Buck.

Wednesday: Dopplereffekt, At Bristol Planetarium
Headed up by Drexicya co-founder Gerald Donald, Dopplereffekt have been outriders of techno and electro music since 1995. Presented as part of Simple Things 2016 Ext programme, this is a unique opportunity to see them in At Bristol’s Planetarium dome.

Thursday: The Honeyfire / Swampmother / Circe’s Diner, The Louisiana
The Honeyfire are sisters Sally and Natalie Joiner, whose ethereal “dream-pop rock” sound consists of picked guitar and dark, low-end drumming. Here they launch new single Replica with support from fellow Bristol bands Swampmother and Circe’s Diner.

Thursday: Akala, Marble Factory
UK rapper Akala blends hip-hop, rock and electro with fiercely intelligent storytelling lyrics and has also become known for his lectures, writing, journalism and theatre production. Support comes from one of Bristol’s finest MCs, Buggsy.

Thursday: Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, Colston Hall
Conductor Vladimir Fedoseyev has turned the TSO into one of Russia’s most widely acclaimed ensembles. This evening’s programme – featuring soloist Jennifer Pike (pictured) – comprises popular pieces by Sibelius and Vaughan Williams as well as Tchaikovsky’s own Symphony no.5.

Friday: Bristol Reggae Orchestra, Colston Hall foyer

Led by composer and arranger Norma Daykin,  the award-winning Bristol Reggae Orchestra have brought together hundreds of musicians from diverse backgrounds to connect, develop and perform great music. Here they launch their new CD with a free-entry show in the Colston Hall foyer.

Friday: Kat & Roman Kostrzewski, Exchange
Polish thrash metallers Kat & Roman Kostrzewski have been around since 1980. Their music is packed with wailing guitar solos and deep throaty vocals.

Friday: Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, St George’s
A special concert marking the 30th anniversary of St George’s rebirth as a concert hall. Their musical partners for the event are much lauded period instrument ensemble Orchestra of the Age of Englightenment, who are also celebrating 30 years of existence this October. Here the orchestra presents a ‘Bach to Bach’ programme of music composed by Baroque’s first family.

Saturday: Simple Things 2016
Our favourite 16-hour venue-hopping music festival returns with a typically broad array of underground music. Highlights include Kano, Warpaint, Death Grips, Powell, Kanda Bongo Man, Ben UFO, Charlotte Church’s Pop Dungeon and Squarepusher’s live electronica band Shobaleader One (pictured).

Saturday: Wakizashi festival,  Malthouse Studio
Very promising newcomer to the festival calendar, concentrating on leftfield sounds from Bristol and beyond. The bands playing include a few of our favourites, such as Get The Blessing, Hysterical Injury, Twin, Evil Usses, Ed Penfold and Drone Soul.

Sunday: John Carpenter, Colston Hall
Simple Things 2016 presents a concert by the film director and composer behind Halloween, The Thing and Escape From New York. As influential in music circles as he is in the world of cinema,  Carpenter is currently touring Europe on the back of two recent albums of synth music, Lost Themes and Lost Themes II.
