New educational music centres for Bristol

By Bristol24/7  Monday Sep 28, 2015

Colston Hall is expanding its educational arm by opening two new music centres in Brsitol.

Bristol Plays Music, the educational hub based at the venue, is opening the Bristol Music Centre South at Merchants’ Academy and the Bristol Centre for Young Musicians at Bristol Cathedral Choir School.

The two new music centres, serving the south and central areas of Bristol, will help Bristol Plays Music in its aim to support 10,000 young people learning, playing and performing music in the city.

The new centres have been opened in response to demand for more places to join a choir, band, ensemble or orchestra, Bristol Plays Music said.

The centres build upon the success of current facilities at Henbury Secondary School, Cotham Second School and Stanton Road, Southmead.

As part of the planned £45 million redevelopment of Colston Hall, new classrooms and a technology lab will be built to help young people develop their skills.

Phil Castang, head of Bristol Plays Music, said: “Every young person in Bristol should get every chance to fulfill their ambition through a varied music curriculum and professional instruction at our music centres.”

The new Bristol Music Centre South will house two new ensembles: the Bristol Modern Ensemble, for children and the South Side Choir.
