Poetry / collaboration
Non Canon and Suzannah Evans lead collaborative night of music and poetry at The Exchange
Non Canon – a.k.a. Bristol songwriter Barry Dolan – and poet Suzannah Evans have been friends for well over 20 years, having met on their first day of university in 2001.
In the intervening decades, they have been regular collaborators on each other’s work, sharing and shaping lyrics, and watching one another in a live environment; Suzannah was ‘best man’, at Barry’s wedding.
Thematically, there is plenty of crossover between the two artists. Both deal with some of the more melancholic aspects of life, from climate anxiety and political turmoil, to mental health issues – but their sad creative preoccupations are seen through a prism of good humour.
is needed now More than ever
Now, the pair have found the centre of their Venn diagram; a tour in which where their mutual artforms of music and poetry can overlap.
They are performing together in Sheffield, Worcester, Reading, Birmingham and London, with a seated show at The Exchange, Bristol on April 18.
Non Canon will be playing songs from his two albums released by Xtra Mile Recordings, while Evans will be performing poems from her collections Near Future, and Space Baby (Nine Arches Press).
Support on the day comes from local poet, Tom Sastry, and musician Mark McCabe – who is also head chef at The Ethicurean, and recently appeared on Great British Menu (BBC Two).
Non Canon & Suzannah Evans, with support from Tom Sastry and Mark McCabe, is at The Exchange on April 18; doors 7pm. Tickets are available at www.headfirstbristol.co.uk.
