Portishead release ABBA cover exclusively on SoundCloud

By Robin Connolly  Thursday Jul 8, 2021

Portishead’s cover of ABBA’s SOS has been released for the first time on streaming platform, SoundCloud.

Revenue will be generated exclusively through the platform’s fan-powered royalty program.

The track was originally made for the film High-Rise (2015) and up until now has only been available via YouTube.

As part of the song’s release, SoundCloud and Portishead will make a contribution to the UK mental health charity, Mind.

Speaking about the release, band member Geoff Barrow said: “After recording it years ago for Ben Wheatley’s film High-Rise, we are excited to finally share it with the world, and we are even more excited that all streaming profits are going to a great cause.”

SoundCloud is an internet-based, artist-first platform that allows users to upload, share and stream audio.

Fan-powered royalties is the site’s latest service, offering equitable payouts and paying artists based on fan’s overall listening time, rather than paying out revenue from a generalised pot.

Michael Pelczynski, head of content & rightsholder strategy at SoundCloud, said: “Portishead’s timeless sound has inspired countless artists and given rise to many emerging genres on SoundCloud.”

He continued: “We are honored Portishead chose SoundCloud, the only platform where the artist to fan connection is directly rewarded, as the first place to exclusively release their cover of this iconic song.”
