Preview: Alvvays, Thekla

By Sammy Jones  Wednesday Sep 6, 2017

Though indie pop quartet Alvvays relocated to Toronto before the release of their sparkling self-titled debut album, their music has always been infused with the Nova Scotian chill of their home province. Alvvays was misted with tales of heartbreak, longing and love lost at sea, and snapped with salt air. Born from a partnership between vocalist and guitarist Molly Rankin and co-guitarist Alec O’Hanley, the band became one of the most talked about newcomers of 2014.

First listens of Antisocialites, the band’s forthcoming record released on Polyvinyl on Friday, September 8, reveal the band have stepped further into the 80s, synth-soaked sound they hinted at on the first LP. In Undertow, the first single, mirrors everything fans fell in love with in the first place. “This record is a fantasy breakup arc and my life nearly imitated art,” says Rankin of the record, and it shows – her deadpan voice carries stories of unrequited love, repeated again and again as if waves returning to shore and fading into nothingness.

Watch some of the most magical musical storytellers around take sail on the Thekla this weekend.
