Preview: Black Country, New Road

By Amy Grace  Tuesday Jan 14, 2020

Black Country, New Road are something of a mystery to me, with only 2 official releases online, their frenzied tracks are something of a Gesamtkunstwerk. The London based septet will be bringing their bizarre concoction to Bristol, which, will definitely be welcomed with open arms.

The free jazz horn sections carve new dimensions, almost working as interruptions between the screechy guitars and post rock grooves. Lead singer Isaac’s vocal runs are delivered with an Ian Curtis-like warble, it’s tangible even through my tinny laptop speakers. I can only imagine what a spectacle it’ll be when performed live.

Black Country, New Road are dropping pop culture references quicker than you can say ‘Alan Partridge heading down to the BP garage to grab a Ginsters from the fridge’. They manage to weave ‘Ariana Grande’ and ‘kitchen larder’ into their eclectic style of songwriting. There’s never a dull moment when they’re in town.
