Preview: Dot to Dot Festival 2017
Dot to Dot Festival started in 2005 and runs over three days in three different cities: Manchester, Bristol and Nottingham, and Bristol’s edition kicks off on Saturday, 27 May. It is the UK festival to discover new talent, but the line-up also includes established acts from overseas. You might think that most of the artists on the poster don’t ring any bells, but in the past the festival has welcomed musicians like Ed Sheeran, Mumford & Sons, Jake Bugg, Noah & The Whale, London Grammar and Metronomy among so many others – so keep your eye out for the next big thing.
For its twelfth edition, Dot to Dot offers a huge lineup of music spread over fifteen different venues across Bristol. With over 160 acts on the program, it’s hard to know where to start. A good starting point could be Thekla to get tickets exchanged against the festival wristbands from 11am. The boat will welcome artists in its Top Deck bar and in the belly of the ship too. The Top Deck’s line-up is mostly folk/Americana, with promising acts such as Holiday Oscar and Jesse Terry. The program for the larger below-decks room is more indie and psychedelic – this is where you will find 18 year-old Cosmo Pyke’s fuzzy sound.
SWX will open its doors later in the afternoon and will bring indie-rock acts such as London four-piece The Big Moon, American band Pinegrove and the haunting pop of Miya Folick to its two stages. At the Fleece, the music will be varied from She Makes War’s gloomy pop to the electronic folk rock of To Kill a King and Scottish band Neon Waltz’s magic. The Louisiana will see diverse musicians perform such as Reading crooner Matt Maltese and captivating neo-soul singer China Bowls.
is needed now More than ever
The headliners of the festival will then appear at Bristol’s O2 Academy: pop-rocky Tom Grennan, indie-rockers Honeyblood and hot new talent Louis Berry will all play here. The evening will end with indie-pop sounds from the melancholic Amber Run and Reading-based quartet Sundara Karma.
Of course the festival will not stop there. Expect to find yourself at The Mother’s Ruin (with a folky line-up), the Bierkeller (where Mystic Braves’ psychedelic rock will blow your mind!) the Stag & Hounds (with great rock band The Rumble), Mr Wolf’s, The Gryphon, Brewdog, Fopp, The Island, or HY Brasil Music-Club late into the night. The Lanes is where the afterparty will take place from midnight until 3am.
