Preview: Howling Owl Records 5th birthday

By Adam Burrows  Tuesday Aug 2, 2016

If you’re not familiar with Howling Owl by now it’s about time you got acquainted. One of the finest labels to come out of Bristol in years, they’re the people behind releases from The Naturals, Oliver Wilde, Towns, Velcro Hooks and Giant Swan.

Run by two members of the magnificently caustic Spectres (who headlined our stage at Brisfest last weekend), Howling Owl have built their reputation on uncompromising music and a largely justified dislike of the music industry. You can read our interview with them from a few months ago here

While it’s hard to believe they’ve only been around for five years they’re due to reach that milestone this week, and in characteristically downbeat style they’re “putting on some events to commiserate our existence.”

These include five-a-side football tournament in Greville Smyth Park and live shows at Space Gallery and The Surrey Vaults featuring the likes of Silver Waves, El Kid and ThisisDA. Friday’s opening show will see the debut of Oro Swimming Hour, a new project from Oliver Wilde and Nicholas Stevenson.

There’s also a boat party headlined by Milo’s Planes (pictured above), one of Bristol’s most promising and ferocious young bands, whose second album Delivering Business Success is released on August 19. Recorded by veteran Bristol producer Mat Sampson (Bink Bonk Studios), it’s a heavyweight outpouring of anger and ennui that successfully captures the intensity of the band’s live shows. Support on that occasion comes from beaty post-punk newcomers Lice, whose brief career has already seen them share stages with Fat White Family and The Fall.

Meanwhile, a record store will be popping up at Space Gallery between Thursday 4 and Wednesday 10 August selling records from “as many Bristol labels as we can fit in”.
