Preview: Moogmemory, Colston Hall
This one should be a bit special.
Matthew Bourne’s new album moogmemory is out on Friday, March 4 and a six-date UK tour begins at Colston Hall the same day.
Based in Yorkshire, Bourne is an important creative force in British music – a virtuoso pianist and keyboard player whose compositions straddle jazz, electronica and contemporary classical.
is needed now More than ever
The new record – a set of solo synth pieces – is named after the 1982 Memorymoog synthesiser that features on the album. Bourne himself has described this hard-to-tame instrument as being “like having a team of six mustangs pulling a stage coach; its power was thrilling, and everybody had better get off the road to let it through.”
Bourne’s 2015 show at the Colston – the sold out Radioland – was an update of Kraftwerk’s pioneering 1975 album Radio-Activity. This time he’ll be using his rebuilt and re-configured Memorymoog to “transport listeners through the stratosphere accompanied by the video of cult video superstar Michael England”.
Support comes from Tom Rogerson (Three Trapped Tigers), whose collaboration with Brian Eno is due out later this year.
