Preview: Peng, The Lanes
Friday the 13th may be unlucky for some, but hopefully not for Bristol. Andy Compton’s Bristol record label Peng is launching a series of new and exclusive monthly events at The Lanes.
The Peng launch party kicks off with a special set from veteran DJ Dr Bob Jones, who has aired his special brand of ‘inspirational black music’ on London radio for over two decades. Dr Bob and Andy Compton will also be joined by vocalist Celestine, known by many as a contestant on BBC’s The Voice, as well as DJ Harri Pepper, one half of Slix Disco.
is needed now More than ever
Andy Compton has made his name in house music, but in recent years has taken his style in a new direction by incorporating African sounds. Last month he released an album with his new band The Sowetan Onesteps – a collaboration of musicians he met in the South African townships.
He told Bristol 24/7: “A lot of the nights in Bristol are centred around more electronic sounding music, and nu-disco, which is cool – but for The Lanes I want to keep it real with real disco and musical dance music, which has human energy trapped in the record grooves.”
“For these events I’m not really concentrating on deep house, but more of a blend of soul, funk, Afro disco and a touch of house if needed. We’ll always have a live performer too – either vocals, or sax of flute, that kind of thing. Call it a musical journey.”
“Dr Bob has been DJing soul music for nearly 50 years, and has run some of the top labels, like Chilli Funk. He’s got a lot to teach us. Bob was the first ever DJ to react to my music 20 years ago. I remember back in ’96 the distributor called me to say he was playing our new release on Kiss FM. So, he’s a special guy to me!”
Andy hinted that he had been in the studio working on a new track – a ‘super tight soul classic’ – with vocalist Celestine. And will we hear it live and exclusive on the night?
“Maybe! You’ll have to come along to find out!”
Peng’s launch party at The Lanes is on Friday, May 13 from 9pm until 3am.
