Preview: Trinity Garden Party

By Adam Burrows  Friday May 6, 2016

This free annual all-dayer is always a treat, and this year should be extra special as the Trinity celebrates four decades as a music venue. Running on Sunday, May 8, from midday to 9pm, it’s a family friendly event with theatre, games, workshops, food stalls and the inevitable face painting.

The Garden Party draws on a wide range of Bristol sounds, the biggest name being Rob Smith (Smith & Mighty / More Rockers). Now trading as RSD, Smith’s been a pillar of the music scene for thirty years. He’s joined at the dubbier end of things by the 20 kilowatt Lionpulse soundsystem, while the Bodywork DJs bring disco, house and a healthy interest in gym-based physical exertion.

The city’s live music is equally well represented. As well as high octane hip-hop from The Most Trio feat. Lil Rhys & Eva Lazarus there are sets from jazz-punk furies The Evil Usses, art-rapper Luui and drag-punk balladeer Many Monika. Most intriguing of all are Yama Warashi. Fronted by former Zun Zun Egui keyboard player Yoshino Shigihara (pictured), their debut EP Moon Zero boasts six tracks of subtle, ingenious, expansive psychedelic pop.
