Quickfire Questions: Alana Bloom, Artemis

By Ngaio Anyia  Tuesday Mar 28, 2017

Alana Bloom’s ‘Artemis’ Crowdfunder is coming to a close later! The theatrical production has been two years in the making and after intensive mythological research and project development, this show will be played out in Motion, Bristol this May for a two day run. An abstract performance, Artemis weaves together past, present and possible future by fusing an unravelling story in the air and on the ground, using aerial circus and physical theatre movement highlighting society’s actions through the themes of ritual and mythology.

Artemis awakes as if from a thousand year slumber, forgotten. Her temples disintegrated, the literature written about her burnt and statues fell when humanity tumbled into darkness. But something stirred the final breath in her and she pulls what’s left of herself back into the realms of the living. Through one final dance with humanity she shall learn and deliver their fate… We sat down with the woman behind the vision, Alana Bloom to talk about what those who have inspired her with some Quickfire Questions.

Which artists are inspiring you right now?

Jon Hopkins has been pretty influential to my work and developing my show – he continues to inspire and engage me. I’m also massively inspired by Nai Palm from Hiatus Kaiyote, her vibe is so strong and every time I listen to her I’m reminded of what it means to be my best self. I’m also consistently inspired by Sylvan Esso and the energy that comes from their music.

What’s your favourite song to play?

Order from Chaos by Max Cooper and Coconut by Fever Ray are pretty high on my recently played. They are two songs that no matter how I am feeling I can put on and be able to move my body and start creating. When you have 6 weeks of rehearsal lined up you need those songs that transport you back into the creative flow.

Who are your major musical influences?

Artists that have been majorly influential has to be Nai Palm mixed in with Thom Yorke, but I’ve also been hugely influenced by folk music and that’s what I seem to edge towards when I’m singing and songwriting myself. Artists like The Ollam, Ye Vagabonds, Nick Drake, The Dirty Three, Bob Dylan and Honeyfeet. I also went on tour with The Turbans many moon’s ago and the sounds they create have definitely worked their way into my musical preferences and influences.

What song do you pick to get ready for a night out?

Coffee by Sylvan Esso is a song that no matter how many time’s i have heard it, I’m still transported back to all the memories that were created whilst listening to it that I can’t help but feel happy.

What have you got coming up?

Artemis! Which is being performed at Motion on May the 4th and 5th – it’s an interdisciplinary performance incorporating aerial circus, movement and physical theatre through weaving a narrative together surrounding the themes of mythology, ritual and the environment. I’m currently crowdfunding so find out more here: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/artemis
