Record Store Day returns
As the sales of vinyl continue to rise, Record Store Day is the icing on the cake. On Saturday, collectors will queue around the city to get their hands on limited edition releases.
Once again, Bristol’s record stores are up to the challenge. Rise have an ‘extravaganza’ planned. The store will open at 8am, supplemented by the early opening of Friska (6am) to serve eager punters. She Makes War, Nerina Pallot and more will perform throughout the day. Upstairs the mood will be set by DJs including Mike Shawe (Hot Buttered Soul), Paul Walker (Situation / Invada FM) and even a late set from the Rise staff.
Idle Hands are also getting involved. The store promises “one or two of the ‘official’ RSD releases,” although there will be “no Bieber.” Daisy Moon (Brstl), Hodge and DJ Stryda (Dubskam) are a few of those scheduled to spin on Saturday.
When we spoke with John Stapleton of Wanted Records last year, he told us his store hasn’t been involved for a time. “We stopped being part of it a couple of years ago and so many of the releases seem to be bought just to be resold on eBay immediately after,” he said. However, Wanted, Payback Records and other stores around the city sure to benefit from the appetite for vinyl.
Record Store Day is celebrated internationally, and has gained more traction as sales are at a 21-year high. Last year in the UK alone, 2.1million LPs were sold.
