Review: 6Music Fest, Motion, Sunday

By Will Richards  Wednesday Feb 17, 2016

Frank Turner, Motion, Sunday

Frank Turner missed his first Valentine’s Day with his girlfriend to open up proceedings at Motion on the final day of the festival, just one marker of how committed to his music he remains. Older tracks Long Live The Queen and The Road still got the best reception, but, six albums in, he has an impressive catalogue to draw from, all of which worked to draw the crowd in. Although still a little rusty from the night before, the crowd loosen up a little by the finale of I Still Believe, re-energised for the rest of the day, and Frank Turner’s job is done.

Poliça, Motion, Sunday

As if in an attempt to go completely the other way from Frank Turner’s hit-packed set, Poliça almost exclusively played tracks from their as-yet-unreleased third album United Crushers in the following slot. Despite the obvious lack of singalongs as a result, the set showed their new album to be darker, heavier and more cutting. Oldies Wandering Star and Tiff do make the set, but all eyes and interest is on the newer tracks, and it looks as if Poliça are about to release their best yet.

Everything Everything, Motion, Sunday

Everything Everything took a step up with their third album from last year, Get To Heaven. It produced some of the catchiest odd-ball indie of the year, and its highlights were rolled out with gusto in the penultimate slot at Motion. Kemosabe, Cough Cough and Get To Heaven track Regret brought the biggest reactions of the day so far, before closer  Distant Past sent the crowd into a frenzy that would continue for the rest of the evening through to headliners Foals.

Foals, Motion, Sunday

Mid-way through their first ever arena tour, the last night of the 6Music Festival might have been the last time to see Foals play a room this small in the UK. Two days before a massive show at Wembley Arena, the band seemed to relish a return to their more intimate beginnings, with the crowd immediately turning into a bundled mess of bodies from opener Snake Oil. A closing trio of Inhaler, What Went Down and Two Steps, Twice showed Foals to have become not only one of the best live bands in the country, but also one of the heaviest. Arenas are clearly where they belong now, but one final night in a cramped sweatbox was a moment to grab with both hands.
