Review: Adrian Sherwood / Laid Blak, Fiddlers

By Elfyn Griffith  Monday Dec 12, 2016

Dub is in the house tonight as legendary UK producer Adrian Sherwood brings his On-U Sound innovations to town. A nigh on two-hour, blistering set from the man delivers his awesome bass-heavy dub reggae mixes to a highly appreciative festive Fiddlers crowd.

Tone set by a gaggle of DJs beforehand, Sherwood steps behind the decks late into the night to really set the place moving with a great blend of eclectic tracks, spanning the usual top quality Studio One tunes to snatches of industrial type techno, samba and ambient, all given the special On-U Sound dub treatment.

Local band Laid Blak – purveyors of reggae/soul – come on after the master, and, through no fault of theirs, can’t really match what went before. What helps boost their fairly standard big dance sound though, is the fact that Sherwood mixes them, adding a potent dub effect to their numbers.

What we get is urban reggae with a touch of soul – played admittedly well by the nine-piece, with that elusive cutting edge provided by the ever excellent Sherwood.
