Review: Brooke Coombe, The Louisiana – ‘She creates something only the gods could come up with’

By Ben Nicholls  Monday Oct 10, 2022

If you get off the 43 bus at Broad Quay and walk towards the Arnolfini, across the bridge and carry on walking straight to the end of the road, stay on the left hand side on Monday just gone, you’ll find yourself at The Louisiana for a night off head bopping, foot stomping goodness from the wonderful, Brooke Combe.

The drinks were flowing, the merchandise stand was full of dedicated fans and the wait was nearly over as people had been waiting since July for this momentous night.

We were treated to one delicacy before the main event. The support act Eli Smart turned the room upside down. From having about four crowd members that were there when he and his band took to the stage, to having one hundred and forty fans fill the entire room.

With glorious harmonies, a strong backbeat and a head full of curls, Smart and his band made an impression that turned fans to hit that follow button on his socials that night.

Alas, the support act is over, the crowd has refilled their drinks and headed back upstairs for the arrival of the main event. The room was packed, the lights were dimmed and the suspense was deadly.

Then, with a swagger in her step and a message to send, Brooke Combe and her band strutted through the crowd and onto the stage.

Combe didn’t only bring the heat that night, she brought the fire too. In just a forty-minute set alone, Combe infused her set with her biggest bops, an all-time classic cover and even tested out new material (which was out of this world).

From listening to the songs on a pair of Apple AirPods at home, to being front row at The Louisiana, the chasm between how her songs sound on Spotify and how they were live at The Louisiana is unrivalled.

With bass frequencies lower than the centre of the earth and vocals that at certain points only a dog could hear, Brooke Combe takes the words Rhythm & Blues and Soul music, to create something only the gods could come up with.
