Review: Cosmic Soul Collective, Surrey Vaults
Entering The Surrey Vaults, the first thing that hit me was the vibe – being greeted with welcoming smiles and beautiful enticing sounds made me intrigued as to the formula which produced this congenial atmosphere.
The visual aspect was immediately flaunted, as, hanging from the beams fell vibrantly spray painted vinyls, swinging along side each other, adding a sense of individuality to the ‘pub’ style venue along with the masses of fairy lights and beautiful wooden Washing Machine sound system booming out tunes.
Customised projected visuals were impressive, introducing unique movement, colour and form; this theme of individuality and expression continued on the first floor. The organisers had obviously thought carefully about the space they had to use and how best to display the artwork. There was an impressive range of art work to explore, from a skate board used as a base to a minimal style of graphic art, delicate collage work, detailed and flowing pen work and expressive experimental paintings of very different styles.
It was refreshing to see such varied styles and artists displaying work alongside each other and I felt this attitude was at the heart of The Cosmic Soul Collective‘s ethics.
‘Spiral of Conscience’, an interactive piece, was intriguing and was being enjoyed by those who chose to take part in what it had to offer. This was an alluring piece of interactive art and again reflected the ethics of the CSC, bringing people together and realising the importance of society being a ‘collective’.
The music was based in the downstairs area. The decks and DJs were central to the energy being generated at this event. It was refreshing to listen to such quality and variety of sounds being played out by an enthusiastic group of people. The vibe was exciting, communal, adventurous and, above all I had a sense of being united with like minded people. Big up the Cosmic Soul Collective for a unique and totally beautiful night!
