Review: Cosmo Pyke, Crofter’s Rights

By Elias Williams  Tuesday Feb 28, 2017

Bristol bore witness to the ghost of Jimi Hendrix on Monday night. Cosmo Pyke graced the stage at The Crofters Rights with an exhilarating performance, layered with a fusion of jazz, blues and rock & roll. You’d never have guessed it was the 18-year-old’s first ever headline show due to an energy comparable to that of a veteran rock star.

Pyke welcomed two talented fellow guitarists to support his first headline show. The first Bristol youngster to showcase his talent was Charlie Don’t Surf. In between powerful vocal performances, his Irish charm and humour was met with a warm response of laughter and the crowd watched in awe as he poured his melodic heart out through enchanting vocals. The second of Bristol’s exciting up-and-comers was local cool dude, Eric Sings. Don’t be fooled by Eric’s smiley persona; the guy has an amazing ability to channel his sad thoughts into hauntingly beautiful melodies, he gave the men in the room a chance to feel comfortable about heartbreak.

After enjoying the low-tempo ballads of the supporting acts, the crowd was ready for some of Cosmo Pyke’s up-tempo energy. He performed his popular songs, All On Me, Social Sites and Chronic Sunshine but also treated us to some of his new stuff. He plays the guitar like he loves it and swings his dreadlocks back and forth like a boss; if Jimi Hendrix had a love child with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, you might just get a Cosmo Pyke. Even if you’re not a fan of his genre, his style is contagious and exists in its own right separate from anything that you’ve heard before, he’s not afraid to rap either. Don’t be surprised if you catch him hopping on a Grime beat with his hometown crew, Ammi Boyz. The future is bright for this gifted young man and I wish him all the best with his music career.
