Review: Elanor Moss, Rough Trade – ‘A set focused on her stunning vocals and mastery of the guitar’

By Kyran Wood  Tuesday Apr 18, 2023

I knew I was in for something different as soon as I walked into Rough Trade, as for the first time in my many years attending gigs there, seats had been put out!

While unusual, it was a pleasant surprise that I felt enhanced the following performances.

After a bout of illness in March, Elanor Moss was finally back in action for her Cosmic Tour, her first-ever headline tour that celebrates the release of her EP Cosmic.

First up as support, we had Sam Griffiths from The Howl & The Hum in a solo performance armed simply with a guitar. His powerful voice packed a punch during his support set, easily warming the audience up with his soulful renditions and fun banter between songs.

And then onto the main event…

Elanor Moss steps on stage with no sign of nerves for her first headline tour.

While quite a new artist on the scene, with her first release only at the start of 2022, she has quickly built up a discography packed full of indie/folk hits.

The set she launched into covered dark themes such as lost love, vices and depression, but balanced this out with tranquil arrangements that offset the lyrics perfectly.

Elanor switched between playing solo with her guitar and welcoming a saxophonist onto the stage with her.

While the saxophone worked well on her song Soundlings, on other tracks it seemed to detract rather than add something to the mix.

With old songs, brand new unreleased songs and even a cover thrown in, it was a well-balanced set that put a focus on her stunning vocals and mastery of the guitar. Definitely a rising artist to watch out for!
