Review: Elvana, O2 Academy

By Amy Gardner  Monday Nov 11, 2019

Elvana are Nirvana-cum-Elvis Presley tribute band, describing themselves as a “audible orgasm of overdrive and old school rockabilly”.

They graced the stage on Saturday, November 9 to a rammed O2 Academy on their second UK tour of 2019 and following a summer of festivals which included Glastonbury, Download and Nozstock.

The set started off with Territorial Pissings from Nirvana’s well -known album Nevermind. This was then followed by Elvis Presley’s That’s Alright before a solid collection of other Elvis/Nirvana hybrid jams.

Elvana provided a great gig to distract from current events

They were plenty of die-hard Nirvana fans in the audience, identifiable by the infamous smiley face t-shirt and singing along word for word to every classic.

One of the best thing about the band’s shows is how they get the audience so involved, from singing with the band to the lead singer walking through the crowds giving out hugs.

Halfway through the gig, the front man asked for a couple to come up on stage and the tour manager grabbed a couple from the crowd. Then, to everyone’s surprise, the girl got down on one knee and proposed to her boyfriend as the band played Falling in Love With You. I’m not crying, you’re crying…

There was even a proposal mid-gig

As the music started again, a mosh pit opened up for Blue Suede Shoes – certainly something I’d never experienced before and one to remember.

The night finished off with more classics from the albums Bleach, In Utero and Nevermind, as well as more Elvis favourites including Viva Las Vegas and Hound Dog.

Being around an hour longer than their normal festival shows, Elvana provided a much needed laugh, sing-a-long and dance during these dreary winter times.
