Review: Erotic Secrets of Pompeii, Rough Trade – ‘Frenetic art rock’

By Alice Boeglin  Monday Mar 14, 2022

It was a great show at Rough Trade starting with two of Bristol’s finest: Hush Mozey and Parkas. Both were unexpected discoveries but once again the Bristol music scene proves it is full of surprises and both bands managed to set up the right mood for Erotic Secrets of Pompeii who were top of the bill for the night.

Based on the enthusiasm provoked by their latest single Truth Coming Out of Her Well in October 2021 and my favorite Rorschach Rorschach released in August 2020, I was really looking forward to see the band live, and they did not disappoint. Even though they have been playing around town for years now, last night was a personal first. And what a slap in the face!

The band plunge you into a thriller inspired by old Hitchcocks on amphetamines, with Nina Hagen on the soundtrack. Lead singer Thomas Hawtin takes up all the space and you have no other choice but to dance with him. A frenetic art rock, twisted and bizarre but terribly pleasant and savage.

So many references and inspiration come to mind but at the end of the day the band are wholly unique and it is hard to compare their music to anything else.

The quintet honours the Bristol scene without a doubt, a new wind on the city that feels fantastic and extremely refreshing.

You can find them next at the Outer Town Festival taking place in Bristol on the Sunday 10th of April. You want a ticket, believe me.
