Review: Imagine That Presents The Rotanas, The Heavy North and Cut Glass Kings

By Issy Packer  Thursday Feb 24, 2022

Less than a week after their last gig at the Exchange, Imagine That offered another night of live music at a different Bristol venue this time. Hosting three bands at The Lanes, the night showcased some of the best rock bands across the UK.

We started the night with Cardiff based, five piece band, The Rotanas. Heavily influenced from classic British 90’s band, this was evident in their brit-pop/rock sound reverberating around the venue. With two guitars, a bass guitar and drums, it was surprising to see a tambourine introduced mid-way through their set but it was a welcome sound, naturally accompanying the songs. It was no surprise to see so many people crowded around the stage; swaying, tapping their feet and bobbing their head.

The next offering was from Liverpool based band The Heavy North with their Bristol debut and they managed to squeeze an even bigger band onto the stage. While leaning heavily into the rock genre, their sound feature more blues rather than the grit-pop sound which peppered the band before them. Although they book-ended their performance with two brilliant tracks, their act dipped slightly halfway through with the songs sounding similar and slightly leaden.

Headlining the night was the rock and roll duo Cut Glass Kings. With a rock sound that is reminiscent of The Black Keys, their performance was probably my favourite of the night. With just drums and a guitar, they dominated the stage. Paul’s vocals offered a raw and distinctive sound with many songs, particularly the last track, ending on a fierce instrumental solo, showing the audience that not only do they know how to write and sing but they also know how to play the hell out of those instruments.
