Review: Kate Nash, The Fleece – ‘It was truly special watching her bring these songs to life’

By Issy Packer  Friday May 27, 2022

Since her debut album, Made of Bricks, Nash has had a loyal following, her sound the anthem for many teenage youths who were watching Skins the same time they were singing along to Dickhead.

Performing to a sold out crowd at The Fleece, the support act comes from LA based singer Revenge Wife, who was warming up the crowd with all empowering, pop anthems. Despite the catchy lyrics and dance beats, her voice wasn’t quite able to carry over the noise of the venue.

When Nash and her band come out on stage, which was decorated like a Renaissance painting, to a snippet of her most famous song, Foundations, the crowd erupted. Nash certainly knows how to get the party started.

Nash’s speciality is making every song relatable to the modern woman, with lyrics about running through the barrier at a train station (Birds) and friends who never really liked your boyfriend (We Get On) making you want to shout and scream along with her and it was truly special watching her bring these songs to life.

She proves that her talent isn’t just in her vocals and songwriting as she performs with an acoustic guitar half way through the set and on the keyboard. Dispersed between her lyrics is her joyous smile and breathy giggle, there is almost a disbelief there, in that she can’t quite believe everyone is singing her songs back to her.

She gave everything and the crowed returned it all.

The singer took a moment to discuss her mental health journey before seguing into Life in Pink, which was from her 2018 album. It was a touching moment, especially as she openly discusses her struggles while noting that the topic of mental health has become a lot more open.

Another pause in the set came when she went to check on some young girls at the front who were getting a bit hot and so invited them on stage for the final few songs to cool down. Throughout the set, Nash proves what makes a modern, young singer/songwriter into a role model.

Bookending the set with her most famous hit, Foundations, before the encore, was a brilliant move from the singer and she proved that the song is still a huge hit, even 15 years later. Nash and the band return for a two song encore which, at first, seemed to be a slower vibe as she took a seat behind the keyboard, but we should’ve known better. Ending on her song Merry Happy, the title perfectly enscapsulating how we all felt, it was euphoric.

Nash proved how versatile she is throughout.
