Review: Lewis Watson, Thekla – ‘Watson’s glee at being back on the boat was infectious’

By Issy Packer  Friday Apr 29, 2022

It had been nine years since I first watched Lewis Watson perform at Thekla. Back in 2013, Watson had performed on the small stage on the top deck of the boat, with a crowd gathered round for a very intimate performance. Now in 2022, things had progressed for the musician.

Performing in Bristol for the first time since 2017, the singer/songwriter had a band with him; a drummer, bassist, guitarist and keyboard player who also supported on vocals. It was a welcome change, adding depth to each song in turn.

Watson’s glee at being back on the boat was infectious and despite a 17 song setlist, he took the time to give to give a little anectdote for each track. At times being self-deprecating, Watson’s honesty when connecting with the audience put us all at ease from the moment he stepped on stage.

There were sounds of joy from the crowd when some of the classics, and with him releasing EPs since 2012 there are many classics, resounded through the boat. Tracks like Into the Wild, Sink or Swim and Castle Street garnered the biggest reaction from the audience and Watson reveled in it.

Around halfway through the set, Watson warned us that there were going to be a few sad songs in quick succession – this was to be expected, he was renowned for his raw and emotion-fuelled tracks. It was easy to get lost in the soft melodies and heartfelt lyrics.

When the band switched tempo for the final few tracks, their sound being more upbeat and pop-heavy, it was a welcome ending to a flawless set.

A lot has changed since the last time I watched Lewis Watson perform at Thekla but one thing that remains the same is his ability to be able to connect with the audience whilst delivering a beautiful performance.
