Review: Lily Moore, The Louisiana – ‘Part Amy Winehouse, part Adele but 100% Lily’
‘I’ve just received the best gift of all time,’ says Lily Moore as she walks on stage brandishing a sphere wrapped in newspaper. ‘A scotch egg!’
With this Lily Moore kicked off the Bristol leg of her most recent tour at The Louisiana.
Part of The National Lottery’s United by Music Tour, the assorted gigs involved aim to bring attention to grassroots music venues/artists and show our support for them.
is needed now More than ever
Charlie Oriain kicked off the evening with a series of acoustic songs. Carefully balanced with some fun audience interaction between them, his calm and gentle voice really carried throughout and was well received by the waiting crowd.
He had met Lily at a writing workshop a few years back and you could tell they had a wonderful friendship, even performing a song originally written with her.
Then Lily hit the stage, brandishing the above-mentioned scotch egg. Citing Bristol as a second home, you could tell she had a connection with the packed room.
Part Amy Winehouse, part Adele but 100% Lily.
Her voice was soulful and incredibly powerful throughout her set and I was thoroughly impressed by the breath control and choices she managed to make without seemingly any effort on her part.
One of the highlights of the set was a beautiful cover of God Only Knows by The Beach Boys.
Everybody knows how stunning the original is, but Moore’s soulful voice really added extra depth to the track and had the crowd singing along to every word.
Backed by a single musician alternating between a keyboard and a guitar, the true champion of each track was the vocals.
The only thing I could complain about was wanting more and by the end of the set, I could tell the audience agreed with me by the thunderous applause that occurred when Lily Moore walked off the stage.
