Review: Pale Waves, O2 Academy

By Georgina Luton  Friday Oct 5, 2018

Manchester goth-pop four piece Pale Waves came to Bristol O2 Academy bringing in a sold out crowd. Nominated a modest 5th on the BBC Sound of 2018, the band wrapped up the last leg of their My Mind Makes Noises UK Tour in Bristol with support from locals Swimming Girls. They played all the tunes you would expect, with the crowd particularly going mad for their hits Kiss and Eighteen.

Opening the show was a short but sweet set from Bristol’s very own Swimming Girls – a four piece that have been coming up through the radar in the last couple of years. They performed a new track which you can check out the new video for called Beneath You. Swimming Girls headline their own show later this month in Bristol at The Louisiana on October 24th.

Despite there being a small technical misdemeanor which meant Pale Waves could not play their track Heavenly, the bands temperament still created an atmosphere of joy and happiness amongst the crowd. Heather, lead singer, lifted the mood by asking everyone “Who’s favourite colour is red?” Which could only really mean one thing, the next song on the set list was indeed Red.

They really know how to get the crowd involved. Heather got the crowd chanting along to One More Time while she broke out the dance moves on stage. If you haven’t already, check out their album My Mind Makes Noises.
