Review: Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks, SWX
Stephen Malkmus commands a certain authority as he steps onto the stage of SWX. Best known as the figurehead of legendary slacker rock band Pavement, he’s royalty in the eyes of his avid fans gathered here tonight.
His most recent solo album Sparkle Hard is a vivid and colourful listen; proving that his deadpan delivery and witty lyrics can still hold their impact in the present day. This all transcends tonight in a setlist which wholeheartedly stands up in its own right. There’s a reason for that; he’s a genius songwriter.
The new album is a joy to watch but there are certain highlights. Shiggy feels like a particularly badass moment. “Came from the underground, throw me right back where I belong”, sings Malkmus with an air of cool. It’s so easy to tap into the music on show tonight because his lyricism is so real and versatile.
is needed now More than ever
Another highlight comes with the emotive Middle America which is a more melodic and heartfelt track. The band are absolutely on point and it’s unsurprising considering the wealth of experience on show tonight. The Jicks are made up of Portland based artists including Joanna Bolme, an artist whose played with loads of bands down the line including infamous grunge band Quasi.
After earlier taboo audience calls for Pavement tracks, Steve inevitably drops a couple of bangers at the end but that doesn’t necessarily matter. I’d have left just as content if he’d just played his Jicks material but anything extra felt like a mere bonus.
