Saffron Records launches ‘urgent’ crowdfunder
Saffron Records has launched a crowdfunding appeal to secure its future as an organisation.
The music tech community works to redress the gender imbalances in the industry, taking an intersectional approach to help DJs develop their skills and make connections.
The platform, founded by Laura Lewis-Paul, has been hugely successful over the seven years it has existed, creating safer spaces and greater access and opportunity in the music industry for marginalised people.
is needed now More than ever
Writing on Instagram on Wednesday, organisers said: “Recently however, we have found ourselves in a precarious position and urgently need your help to continue.”

Organisers said the cost of living crisis and a number of arts cuts and funding cuts had left Saffron Record “in a tight spot”.
“As a Black Caribbean-led organisation, Saffron was eligible for a number of grants sparked by the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement,” they said.
“This allowed us to thrive in the short term, but these funds were largely one-off gestures rather than essential ongoing core support.
“Over the past few months, a number of other crucial and expected arts grants and income sources for our work in 2023 have not materialised or been cut, and our primary industry donor has departed.”
Organisers said they are looking for a more sustainable long-term plan but need funding to get through the next few months.
Saffron Records’s programme has helped provide music tech training and community infrastructure for over 1000 people globally, offering discounted or free places and supporting individuals from the global majority.
“If you want to do something real to support the cause this International Women’s Day, please read, share and donate,” the Instagram post read.
Music institutions and communities such as dBs Institute and Save Our Scene UK and individuals shared their support on Instagram, with many reflecting inon their own positive experiences with Saffron.
