Single review: Alichè – Could You?

By Lily Batten  Wednesday Nov 25, 2020

Splitting her time between Bristol and London, Alichè is an artist that connects to spiritual lyrics (through her Buddhism connections) alongside an urban-influenced beat. Perfecting a masterful and modern R&B blend with sophisticated vocal ability, Alichè has released new effort, ‘Could You?’ This artist draws from greats like Stevie Wonder and Nina Simone, both of which are clear influences in her current body of work.

Oozing soul-enriched vocals, the track enters with a delicate key placement alongside simplistic percussion. Beyond the melody, the single holds a nostalgic sense of R&B roots, whilst narrating a tale of immediate lust wondering for company. Something especially poignant in these gradually darker and increasingly colder nights. Homing in on the world’s lonely and unfortunate circumstances, Alichè calls out for an immediate solution by considering a plethora of “could you?” possibilities.

Of the single, Alichè notes “Looking out at the way the world is at the moment I think it’s important to tell people we need and want them, who knows when we can tell them again. So if you want the deeper side to it, I guess I’m not very good at telling people when I need them. Then winter comes in and the days get shorter and colder, we could sometimes do with something to lift us from time to time. I know I definitely do. Writing ‘Could You?’ was accepting that, being playful and a way of seeing the better and higher sides of winter”
