Twelve Bristol MCs feature on new Bristol focused track

By Issy Packer  Wednesday Apr 20, 2022

Produced by local Bristol producer OH91, the Bristol City remix was recently released by grime artist Jay0117 and includes local artists Dimpson, Double, R.E, Wish Master, Dash Villz, Firee Young, Springa, Pine, Carasel, Merv, Krazy.

The original song was made in 2018 and “has been on my hard drive since then,” Jay tells Bristol24/7. “Bristol City is my most viewed music video on YouTube. When we recorded the initial music video for the original song we partnered up with YoBike to give the city a promotion ‘CheeseAndBread’ code to get a free ride.”

When he came up with the idea of a remix, it wasn’t an easy process, getting so many artists on the track. Jay tell us, “the process took a few months to get everyone in my studio individually. If I was to make the tune again today, I would have added a few more Bristol artists that have come up over the past few years but I’m very happy with my selection of artists on the Remix. It’s got a mix of ages, races, and places; from St Pauls to Easton to Kingswood to Manor Farm.”

Discussing Bristol’s diverse music scene in general, Jay says that “sometimes Bristol can be a creative graveyard, artists that are born and die in Bristol. With social media and YouTube however it has made it much more accessible to get out of the Bristol bubble and break into the main national music scene.”

His advice for upcoming artists trying to break through into the mainstream? “Create your own lane and don’t to rely on anybody else. Don’t watch anybody else’s move in envy and don’t compare yourself to anybody else. Finally, once you start releasing music, keep you foot on the gas and keep releasing, consistency is key.”

Giving us a heads up on some of the local artists to keep an eye out for, he includes rappers: TKorStretch, Sylla and Fessor. “All 3 of these artists make different styles of music however are marketing their music well and are now getting played on Radio1xtra and other big radio stations.”

The support of the song has been remarkable; “the Remix has gone down really well since putting it out and the Bristol scene is very healthy right now.” In keeping with his advice, consistency being key, Jay plans on releasing one single each month this year – “So far so good!”
