Simon Mole and Gecko present The Big Bristol Poetry Picnic

By Sarski Anderson  Monday May 16, 2022

Children’s poet Simon Mole is an ambassador for National Poetry Day who has a decade of experience using poetry and rap in schools and communities.

He has also inspired hundreds of thousands of children through his YouTube poetry tutorials, encouraging them to unleash the unique power of self-expression.

Singer, storyteller and musician Gecko, who recently toured with singer songwriter Gavin Osborn, covers what he calls “the big things in life; think iPhones, libraries and Guanabana fruit juice to name but a few”.

Working together as Mole & Gecko, the duo are bringing Poetry Picnic to The Wardrobe Theatre for two shows on June 4.

The event is part of a wider project called Your Words, Your World, which strives to help children and young people at theatres, libraries and online to harness the power of words to articulate their inner world.

At Poetry Picnic – which is a ‘bring your own biscuits’ event – children will be invited to write their own poems from the comfort of their picnic blankets, as well as listening to Mole & Gecko performing some ‘Beatles-meets-the-Beastie-Boys style bangers’.

For aspiring performance poets, there will be an opportunity to share the stage for the grand finale, and all children will be given a special notebook to take away and fill with their own poems.
