2022 Kevin Elyot prize winner Malaika Kegode brings Outlier back to Bristol Old Vic
The genre-blurring gig-theatre show Outlier was made in Bristol, and premiered at Bristol Old Vic during the summer of 2021.
During its initial two week run, it received widespread praise for its blend of autobiographical power and an innovative creative sensibility – fusing the performance poetry of Malaika Kegode, the music of local prog-rock band, Jakabol, and projections by Christopher Harrisson.
The show tells Kegode’s personal story; a coming of age tale of addiction, isolation, family, love and family, set against the rural Devon landscapes where she grew up.
is needed now More than ever
Outlier is coming back to Bristol Old Vic from September 14-24, for its second two-week run.
The dates come in the wake of Kegode’s new appointment as the 2022 winner of the Kevin Elyot Award, by the University of Bristol’s Theatre Collection.
The award will support her in the development of her work, inspired by the archive of Elyot, who was a renowned playwright, screenwriter and a Bristol Drama alumnus.

“I will be drawing inspiration from Kevin Elyot’s plays and process to write a new play that explores sex, femininity and the fractious search for identity in the digital age,” says Kegode.
“I hope to channel Kevin’s humour and revolutionary spirit in this story of two women’s exploration of desire and connection.”
Following the September run, Outlier will pilot a studio and rural touring version of the production in the Autumn, ahead of a national tour in 2023.
Outlier is at Bristol Old Vic on September 14-24. Tickets are available at www.bristololdvic.org.uk, where you can also book a two seater sofa.
