A new kind of theatre at Bristol Old Vic

By Martin Booth  Friday Jun 11, 2021

Malaika Kegode is part of a new kind of theatre for Bristol Old Vic.

Her new show, Outlier, was written and developed in a world, industry and city that is radically changing; and it will be performed both for a live audience and also livestreamed for two performances.

Outlier looks at drug culture and survival in a small Devon town, and combines Malaika’s poetry and the music of Bristol band Jakabol in what is being described as a “gig-theatre show”.

“It’s a narrative show but it’s told through music and spoken word, as well as through your traditional theatre conventions” said Malaika on the Bristol24/7 Behind the Headlines podcast.

She added: “Ultimately it’s about the power of art and creation, when your life is really tumultuous, when your life is not really going in the direction you thought it would, and creating stuff about it is the best way to cope with it.”
