Beyond Face presents early-stage work from global majority artists from Bristol and the south west
The stated mission of theatre makers Beyond Face is “to provide opportunities for artists of the Global Majority to live, work and thrive in the south west”.
They are dedicated to reframing the narrative around perceptions of quality, and to platform black and global majority artists in the region through workshops, performances and a development and training programme for those early in their careers.
On April 9 at Tobacco Factory Theatres’ Spielman Theatre, Beyond Face is hosting the latest in a series of showcase evenings around the region, presenting early-stage work from a raft of exciting acts.

The talents on show range from new writing, spoken word and comedy, to theatre and dance, as well as a performance of the company’s pop-up production All One Way.
For artistic director Alix Harris, nights like this are full of opportunity: “These early stage work events are just the beginning of how we aim to amplify our new mission as a company to be at the forefront of creating opportunities for artists of the global majority,” she comments.
“We are excited to be meeting new artists this year and hope that these events will be an opportunity to begin new relationships and for Beyond Face to be profiled across different areas in the region.”

Corinne Walker is artist development producer for Beyond Face. “It’s been a challenging two years for all of us and in the theatre and performance industry it has been no different especially for black and global majority artists,” she says.
“So we wanted to do what we could to provide a platform for these artists in the region and get their work in front of live audiences again.
“The South-West is absolutely bursting with talent and we are thrilled to be able to showcase that with these events.”

Following the evening of early-stage performance, on April 10 Beyond Face will be running Playspace, an all-day workshop for global majority artists, also at The Spielman Theatre.
The event is open to all global majority artists from across Bristol, and promises to provide a place for pressure-free play and collaboration, as well as a chance to meet and mingle with fellow creatives across a wide range of disciplines.
