Family theatre landing in Bristol this October

By Sarski Anderson  Tuesday Oct 10, 2023

When it comes to theatre, young families in Bristol are often spoilt for choice.

This October is no different, with the Arnold Lobel adaptation Owl at Home (5+) at Tobacco Factory Theatres, and ‘prehistoric science pop gig’ The Colour of Dinosaurs (6+) coming to Bristol Old Vic’s Weston Studio.

The month also marks the very welcome return of two theatre shows aimed at the 3+ age group.

Oh No George! – part of Bristol Circus City

Fans of Chris Haughton’s memorable picture books will likely be familiar with the errant but lovable dog George and his owner, Harris, who leaves him to his own devices for a while.

Can George restrain himself from chasing the cat, rifling through bins and flowerbeds, eating the prohibited cake and generally causing havoc?

With its mix of circus, mime, music and comedy, Can’t Sit Still’s fun and faithful adaptation of the modern classic Oh No George! has been delighting young audiences in theatres – and, during the Covid-19 pandemic, online – for the last few years.

The current tour comes to The Redgrave Theatre as part of the family component of Bristol Circus City 2023.

The Star Seekers

Out of this world family entertainment is promised this half term from The Star Seekers, the smash-hit co-production from The Wardrobe Ensemble and The Wardrobe Theatre, where it returns for a 10 day run.

Inspired by “the limitless majesty of galaxies, the solar system, shooting stars and planets”, it’s an interactive theatrical experience in which young ‘Star Seekers’ in the audience are invited on a mission through space, with plenty of songs, fun, and “anti-gravity antics” along the way.

The show was developed and first performed in 2015, becoming the bestselling show in The Wardrobe Theatre’s history at that time. It has since enjoyed multiple runs, including an acclaimed transfer to The National Theatre in 2018.

After eight years, two of the original cast are stepping down, with Heloise Lowenthal and Jack Orozco Morrison taking the roles of ‘Alph’ and ‘Gammo’ respectively, joining Jesse Meadows who continues as ‘Betty’.

Oh No George! (age recommendation 3+) is at The Redgrave Theatre on October 14 at 1.30pm and 3.30pm, and on October 15 at 11am and 2pm, as part of Bristol Circus City. Tickets are available at www.redgravetheatre.com.

The Star Seekers (age recommendation 3-8) is at The Wardrobe Theatre on October 21-30 at 11am and 2pm. Tickets are available at www.thewardrobetheatre.com.
