Good Little Boy: A One-Act Comedy
Produced by the team behind The Sitcom Trials, the stage show responsible for launching the careers of many of the nation’s biggest comedy stars, tonight promises a darkly comic tale about morality, masculinity and Monopoly.
Written by Bristolian comedian Lewis Cook, the play tells the story of nervous school caretaker George and his desperate attempts to win back his estranged wife. “It’s part-inspired by Roald Dahl’s Tales of The Unexpected, and the idea of there being something eerie and sinister bubbling beneath the facade of suburbia,” explains Cook. “My comedy’s always been about neurotic failures in way over their heads, and I think George is probably my most neurotic yet.”
Mild-mannered school janitor George is desperate to win back his estranged wife, the breathtakingly self-absorbed Lesley. But she is inexplicably attracted to a cruel and loathsome lay-about, and George finds himself loveless, homeless and hopeless.
Driven to despair and beset by loneliness, George finally reaches breaking point and, in a moment of madness, he lashes out with grave consequences. As events spiral out of control, George finds his Jenga tower of deception becoming ever more precarious.
Cook is also one half of the double-act Cook and Davies, whose acclaimed show Planet Earth and All Who Sailed In Her took the 2014 Edinburgh Fringe by storm.
Created in Bristol in 2001, The Sitcom Trials is a competition and stage show that promotes new comedy writing. It has acted as a springboard for many of comedy’s biggest stars, including Miranda Hart, Russell Howard and Justin Lee Collins. They return to The Wardrobe Theatre, above The White Bear pub, following their previous sell out shows Checkpoint Dave and Barbra and Jeffrey.
Directed by Sitcom Trials mainstay Laura Ollerton and performed by a cast of local actors and comics, ‘Good Little Boy’ promises an evening of intrigue and hilarity – as well as, perhaps, a glimpse into the future of British comedy.
