Impromptu Shakespeare back for The Bard’s birthday in 2023
Selling out their last run at The Wardrobe Theatre, acclaimed improv troupe Impromptu Shakespeare are back again on April 21 – this time for a three night run that, happily, concludes with The Bard’s (459th) birthday.
And that’s not the only anniversary to celebrate. 2023 also marks 400 years since the publication of Shakespeare’s First Folio, making it a truly apposite time to dive into a world full of wit, love, death and double-crossing from a cast of actors in doublets, ruffs and trunk hose.
Each show is unique, and, from the thematic echoes to the characters and the language, unmistakably infused with the hallmarks of a Shakespearean classic.

Between them, the ensemble have experience in a host of long-running shows including Adventures of the Improvised Sherlock Holmes, Steamed! The Improvised Dickens Novel, Bumper Blyton and the legendary spontaneous soap Closer Each Day (now on its 26th season, and by some distance the longest running improvised narrative in the world).
For those unfamilar with the Shakespeare canon, the company aims to provide a funny, accessible and unpretentious way into the world of The Bard.
With plenty of opportunities to interact and shape the narrative as it plays out on stage, the show is also intended to be warm and inclusive to its audience. As ensemble member Tom Wilkinson reminds us, “Improv at its best is a gentle art”.
Impromptu Shakespeare (age recommendation 10+) is at The Wardrobe Theatre on April 21-23 at 7.30pm. Tickets are available at www.thewardrobetheatre.com.
