Jude Merrill retires from Travelling Light

By Steve Wright  Tuesday Oct 25, 2016

This month sees the retirement of Jude Merrill, Artistic Producer of Bristol’s acclaimed young people’s theatre company Travelling Light, after 30 years in the post.

Jude, who was awarded an MBE for her commitment and services to theatre for children and young people, was Travelling Light’s first paid employee in 1986. In the three decades years since, the company has grown to a team of eight – and from toured almost exclusively into local schools to showing their work throughout the UK, Europe and many other parts of the world.

Jude herself has produced 43 shows that have performed in the West End, on Broadway, in Jamaica, South Korea and elsewhere, all the while keeping the commitment to local schools and the Bristol theatre community. Highlights have included the multi-award-winning Into The West, alongside Tobacco Factory Theatres and Bristol Old Vic co-productions such as Boing!, Cinderella: A Fairytale and 101 Dalmatians.

“It is fair to say that the work that Jude has done over the last 30 years has had a huge impact on the Bristol theatre scene as well as the wider community of theatre makers creating high quality theatre for young people,” says Alison Sully, Travelling Light’s General Manager. “She will be greatly missed here at Travelling Light where Jude’s influence will forever play its part.  We are now looking for our next Artistic Producer and are excited to welcome the person who will inspire and deliver the next chapter of Travelling Light’s story.”
