Mayfest to go biennial from 2018
Mayfest is taking a year off in 2017, before returning as a biennial festival in 2018.
Co-diectors Kate Yedigaroff and Matthew Austin told fans of the festival that “in order to keep thriving, we need longer to make it all happen”.
Bristol’s unique festival of contemporary theatre is dedicated to presenting a broad range of unusual, playful and ambitious work from leading theatre makers from Bristol, the UK and beyond.
is needed now More than ever
In the past few years the festival has increased dramatically in terms of reach, scale and ambition.
Yedigaroff and Austin admitted that this year they have struggled to secure the additional investment needed in order to bring audiences the festival to which they have grown accustomed.
“As you may be aware, the pressures of fundraising in the current climate make delivering an annual festival very demanding,” the pair wrote in a statement.
“So we’ll be back in 2018, and every ‘even’ year after that.
“And while we’ll miss the old dear next year, this is actually rather exciting. Because we’re not going away.
“This structure will also enable us to explore our off-peak programming through a series of what we are currently calling ‘fireworks’.
“Expect these in each ‘odd year – exhilarating live experiences that will join the dots from one festival to another, and help us and you discover new places, new voices, and different stories.”
