Preview: Father Dagon, The Island
Attuned to the likes of The Invisible Circus and The Wonder Club, Bristol theatre audiences have always been open to promenade and immersive theatre – works where the audience is free to roam the venue and to experience the storyline in a variety of ways, interacting directly with the performers as they go.
And this month Bristol audiences get another chance to immerse themsleves in the immersive style, as Dread Falls Theatre tour their promenade piece influenced directly by the works of American horror author H. P. Lovecraft.
The piece, by company founder and show director Victoria Snaith, uses physical theatre, spoken word, live music and sound design to evoke Lovecraft’s adage that “the oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear – and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is that of the unknown.”
“By creating a performance where the audience are free to roam, we’ve taken away the comfortable space between audience and performer, therefore creating a feeling of unknowing and fear,” Snaith explains. Dread Falls intensify this uneasy, uncanny atmosphere by using physical, rather than language-based storytelling – creating an unknown language much like those that permeate Lovecraft’s work. You’ll also find a live, improvised musical score, performed by experimental musician raxil4.
